Santiburi Golf Club, Chiang Rai's first and foremost golf course was designed to take advantage of the natural terrain by Robert Trent-Jones jr., one of the world's finest golf course designers.

The 18 holes championship course, par 72, is a challenge for every golfer. Rolling hills guarded by countless sand and grass bunkers, trees and huge water hazards, were designed into the natural landscape of the northern region.

The beautiful and full functional club house dominates the highest point of the club area.

Course Information

The Santiburi Golf Club is situated in the norternmost portion of Thailand near Chiang Rai. The land on which Mr. Santi Bhirom Bhakdi selected to develop this golf course features a series of hills and valleys which naturally lent themselves to the development of a world class golfing experience. The land form itself was thus the primary feature with which to begin and the layout of the course evolved from closely working with and enhancing the many features which were provided.

The clubhouse is situated on a hilltop with sweeping panoramic vistas of the entire golf course unfolding below.

The front nine plays down from the hillside into a low area which is dominated by a large free form lake which is experienced on holes #2 through #6. The front nine then works back into the hills to finish at hole #9 with the longest par 4 on this side playing up a valley and the stunning clubhouse looming a bove in the distance.

The back nine begins with a series of holes playing primarily through a series of valleys amongst ominous hillsides allowing for each hole to have its own individual identity. The back nine concludes with a dramatic pair of holes at #17 and # 18 which play along a chain of three lakes working back up to the clubhouse.

The course was designed to cater to golfers of all skill levels. This has been accomplished by a number of means starting with multiple tee locations. Aside from the variance in length, the tees have been positioned at different angles to increase the challenge for good players and decrease the challenge for shorter hitters by reducing angles on doglegs and away from hazards.

The fairways are generally wide for the average player. The farther down a tee shot is struck the more narrow the fairway becomes, thereby placing a premium on accuracy for the better player. The fairways have also been contoured to receive and hold shots

In the desired angle of play. This receptiveness keeps the ball in play and adds to further enjoyment of the round of golf.

The greens which are the heart of the course have been designed with numerous pin positions throughout. Each green was seen as a unique and individual complex and thus great care and detail went into each and every one to create 18 different and exciting targets and surfaces for the enjoyment of the game. A variety of challenges have been created in conjunction with each green complex in the form of bunkers, grass hollows, and tightly cut fairway areas spilling out sides and backs, as well as leading into the greens. These varied features create for interesting shot making which bring a strong, short game into clear focus allowing for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy their game.

Hazards have been intertwined into the golf experience in the form of bunkers, lakes, grass hollows, and trees. These hazards are not just situated to add strategic challenge to the golf course, but are often situated and used to add definition and visual beauty to the golfing experience.

Our design style requires the golfer to think. The varied options on many of the par 4 and 5 holes present different approaches to attacking the hole. The risk/reward theory plays prominently throughout the course whereby the golfer is tempted to carry a bunker or lake off the tee to reduce length for the next shot and have a better angle to approach the green. If properly executed these shots will be rewarded. If not, various hazards loom to engulf the miss struck ball leaving a challenging recovery, Conversely there are options on every hole to play away from the various hazards and take a more conservative approach to playing the course. This method may not yield as many birdies but it can significantly reduce the chances of bogies or worse.

In summary, Santiburi Golf Club has been the product of a true labor of love. Nature provided an outstanding piece of its land to work with and, through the guiding hand of Mr. Santi Bhirom Bhakdi and his team, we have together procuced an outstanding golfing experience for the members of Santiburi Golf Club and the golfing world at large.
