St. Andrews 2000

St. Andrews 2000 names in honour of its venerable Scottish’s St. Andrews. St. Andrews 2000 is located in picturesque hilly countryside in the South Eastern Thai province of Rayong, just over half and hour’s drive from the famous seaside resort town of Pattaya. Designed by the flamboyant English-born and Cambridge-educated architect Desmond Muirhead, St. Andrews 2000 opens for play in you guessed it the year 2000. The sprawling par 74 course adjoins its sister layout, the older, well established par 72 layout of the Rayong Green Valley Country Club.

It’s not a typ-o-par 74 for an astounding back market length of 7777 yard, thanks to the two endlessly long par6. The two monster holes in question are the 4th and 13th, which weigh in at 855 and 857 yards respectively. Moirhead has created a visually stunning, sweeping layout that must rank among the best new courses in the land of a thousand smiles.

St. Andrews 2000, an uncompromisingly tough golf course that will test even the best of golfers to their limits.

Working with a spectacular, undulating natural topography, St. Andrews 2000 was built to replicate the wind-swept Scottish links courses, offering an uncompromising challenge aimed at players with handicaps of 18 or lower. Opened at the dawn of the Pacific Century, this course will soon become known as one of Asia's true championship courses. Desmond Muirhead created a full 18 holes, 74 par of memorable golf, featuring elevated tees and greens, tight landing zones, split elevation fairways, huge putting surfaces and two par 6's

The Course demands a combination of both power and accuracy, with the strategic positioning of hazards forcing the player to remain focused on each and every shot, as one mental error can be very costly. This is a touch, demanding course that will test every club and trick in your bag, and leave you with lots of stories to tell your friends about a challenging round of golf that will create lasting

There are some adjustments that you must remember to make to your game. First, there is an element of elevation to either the green or the tee box on almost every hole, and in many cases there can be very substantial. You will need to bring your lob wedge and should use balata balls to make approach shots stick. Second, there is wind to factor into almost every shot – when you combine this with the elevation factor it can have dramatic effects on your club selection. Third, the sand in the bunkers is more like powdered grey clay, which is heavier that what we’re used to in Thailand – it plays difficultly and makes the ball perform differently. Fourth, the greens are extremely large and have more undulations than are normally found in Thailand, make your first putt extremely important. Fifth, there are the par 6’s.

The two par 6’s present one of the most memorable and singularly unique features of this course and they add an entirely different challenge. The additional long fairway shot that must be played demands an entirely different dimension in concentration and course management. Both holes really do take four good shots to get to the green, and both greens are large, split-tiered affairs guarded by bunkers and water.
